This summer I am planning a month long road trip to Colorado from my home in New Hampshire. I’m hoping to do lots of overland exploring throughout colorado, with a friend’s wedding plopped in there at some point.

I have a few locations I want to visit already. Imogene pass, Engineer pass, I would love some ideas & places to check out from folks in the area or experienced with overlanding through the rockies. Good places to camp? Scenic trails? Weird stuff?

I don’t off-road, but you should work in some hot springs while you’re here. I know there are a bunch in the backcountry I haven’t made it to yet.

I’ve hiked Imogene and it’s a really neat place. Not sure when your trip is but they have a (running) race over the pass in early September so avoid it then.

Go as late in the summer as possible or some passes may still be closed from snow. I was out there in August a few years ago and some were still closed.

Might I suggest a book.

I bought one for Moab before I went and it gives good inormation and a little bit about the trails. I haven’t been to CO, but plan on it next year as we have some friends that moved out around Telluride, Colorado that help run a 4-wheeling outfit. I’ll probably bring my Jeep, not sure if I’ll trailer it or camper or something.

Stick to the San Juan mtns- (SW corner of the state. The T-ride/Silverton/Durango zone).

It’s the best of the best here.

This is great! Out here we usually just get the Delorme gazeteers and wing it on unmaintained roads. But this is definitely going to help. Thank you.

Will be there in August, so hopefully that won’t be an issue.
